For mixed returns, our handheld rule is “scan first, decide second” so intake assigns a disposition code before the pallet hits the floor. Caveat: it only works if carriers push location every 2–3 minutes; with sparse pings you end up chasing ghosts.

We added HOS remaining as a guardrail in live reroute, so the TMS won’t bounce a driver if it would force a violation; pairing that with a simple “hot return” tag in the YMS lets the yard pre-stage a no-touch door… It reduced ping-ponging without slowing triage, but the caveat is we only flip it on during peak windows or we miss cheap consolidations. live reroute with a seatbelt.
